Overview: During the first half of this course, we explored various definitions of Central/Eastern Europe and noted one commonality: that the region is often
associated with “small nations” which “are subject to history but cannot always shape it (Kundera 1984). As part of this discussion, we noted that the region was a
target of conquest for both the Nazi German and Soviet regimes and that domination by the Nazis and the Soviets had critical consequences for governance (Gross 1989;
Ekiert 1996; Rothschild and Wingfield 2008; Stokes 2012; Batt 2012) and for transition to democracy (Ash 1990; Ekiert 1996; Rothschild and Wingfield 2008; Stokes 2012;
Batt 2012) throughout the region.
Prompt (Nazi German/Soviet Domination): Many scholars contend that the history of Central/Eastern Europe is a story of “small nations” (Kundera 1984), subject to
events that they cannot control. The consequences of being a “small nation” in a region of “larger powers” was in evidence during the interwar and World War II eras,
as the region was subject to domination by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in a relatively short time frame. Using the experience of TWO of the following
countries: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, identify the factors that facilitated Nazi and Soviet control in your selected states. Was it
particularly difficult for the Soviet regime to replace fascist puppets with communist satellites? Why? Why not?
To address this prompt, your paper should do the following:
1) Define what is meant by “small nations”.
2) Identify economic, institutional, and socio-cultural aspects that facilitated Nazi control in your
selected cases.
3) Identify economic, institutional, and socio-cultural aspects that facilitated Soviet control in
your selected cases.
4) Explain why the transition from fascism to communism was/was not difficult in your selected
cases.
Paper Requirements: Your paper should be 6-8 pages in length using 12 point font and standard margins, citing sources where appropriate. Your essay should provide a
coherent, well organized and well-argued response to the prompt, using course readings and lecture material to support your argument. For those of you who have
questions on how to structure the paper, there is a handout available on the course website. Please be advised that papers which do not have an easily identifiable
thesis and/or rely solely on lecture slides will be penalized. While you may use outside sources, you do NOT need outside resources to answer this question.
