Primary and Secondary Data Sources

  1. In bullet points, list at least 5 statistics related to the problem your program will address (should include both national-level and local level statistics). Include correct APA citations.

• Ex. In the United States there are an expected 1.2 million people living with HIV, with an estimated 50,000 new HIV cases every year (CDC, 2013).
• Ex. Women made up 19% (8,328) of the estimated 44,073 new HIV diagnoses (CDC, 2013).
• Ex. In 2014, African Americans accounted for 44% of new HIV cases despite representing only 14% of the U.S population (CDC, 2014).
• Ex. Among all women diagnosed with HIV in 2014, an estimated 62% (5,128) were African American, 18% (1,483) were white, and 16% (1,350) were Hispanic/Latina (CDC, 2014).

  1. In bullet points, provide 2 factors that contribute to the health problem you have chosen. 1 should be behavioral. 1 should be nonbehavioral. Look for things like lack of knowledge, skills, attitudes, behavior, access, affordability, social influences (partners, friends, people) that are causing the problem. Include APA citations.

Behavioral

• Ex. The CDC indicates that three out of four HIV transmissions in African American women occurred because of condom-less sex with an HIV positive male (CDC, 2009)

Non-Behavioral (Attitudinal and Partners’ Influence on Sexual Decision Making)

• Ex. Literature has shown African American women at higher risk of contracting HIV/AIDS typically underestimate the personal susceptibility of HIV/AIDS (Gilbert, Wright, 2005).
• Ex. African American women are hesitant to insist on condom use with their male partners, as the fear of communication with male partners can be associated to embedded cultural ideals of male dominance within African American communities (DiClemente et al., 2009).

  1. Primary Data Source: Briefly describe 1 way in which you will gather primary data. Recall, primary data is data you collect yourself from the communities. This helps to “fill the gap” between the secondary data collected above.

• Ex. Primary data will be collected my means of four individual focus groups, in which qualitative research would be acquired. This method will conveniently assess the needs of African American women in the South Bronx because it will enable planners to acquire feelings, beliefs, attitudes, insights and opinions about HIV/AIDS.
