Simone de Beauvoir’s account of how women have been perceived as Other, and subsequently read bell hooks’ account of the effects of slavery on the perception of Black women in the United States.

We invite you to reflect on their respective account, first, by briefly describing what Beauvoir means by the category of Other and how this applies to women, and; second, by discussing how hooks might respond to Beauvoir’s analysis. This should include both some points of agreement as well as critical points.
