Reading Analysis in Relation to Black Diaspora Studies
As your first reflection piece focused on the foundational theories of diaspora studies that we explored in the first three lectures, this reflection should focus on the readings or themes we covered in the Fall.
You can choose to briefly analyze one reading that you liked in relation to diaspora studies - Maus, The Coyote Columbus Story, Return to Sender, Lucy, Paul Gilroy's Black Atlantic, Dionne Brand’s Land to Light On, and/or "Dirty Pretty Things" among others or you can analyze a particular theme that covers many readings - "Rewriting Histories of Displacement" and/or "Labour, Migration, and Politics." Consult your syllabus for this. Ultimately, it is your reflection piece - you can choose to analyze any specific aspect of what we explored in the Fall.
This paper will be a space for your reflection - what did you learn that was new, how do you relate this particular film or novel to how it portrays particular diasporas, and in what ways, what are the broader themes in the work(s) you have chosen, what type of diasporas do they depict and how?
