Weighting 20%
Due Date: Week 12, Monday 22nd May, 2017
Aim:
In line with the College of Emergency Nurses Australasia’s (CENA) competency standard domain
6 ‘Leadership’, self-reflection is an integral component of emergency nursing practice. The aim of
this assignment is to develop critical reflection skills and skills in applying a reflective framework.
Instructions:
You may write this assignment in first person as you will be asked to apply each topic area to
your current work practice and critically reflect on this.
1. Choose one of the reflective frameworks, either Gibbs [1988] or Johns [2006]
2. Clearly state the reflective framework you will be applying in an opening paragraph at the
beginning of the assessment item.
3. Apply the same framework to each of the three topics listed below to evaluate and reflect
upon your own practice as a registered nurse working in an emergency department in
relation to:
a. Barriers to, and facilitators of, developing patient assessment and
examination skills that are applicable in multidisciplinary settings.
b. Managing patient deterioration OR patients with pain in the ED.
c. An example of an incident that required leadership/management skills.
4. For each topic ensure you:
a. Clearly and concisely describe an event that is relevant to the topic of your
own experience as a RN in an emergency setting.
b. Explain the relevance and meaning to yourself, your context and your
practice.
c. Use critical reflection and reasoning to underpin your stance/argument, the
relevance of your post and lessons that can be learned.

d. Support your reflection with reference to the literature (please de-identify
names and other aspects of your reflection that could identify a patient or coworker):
Other criteria elements:
? Assignment has an opening paragraph briefly stating and outlining the framework being
used.
? Assignment has an opening sentence that contextualises the reflection.
? Has a concluding sentence that summarises the overall argument/premise in the topic.
? Always refer to the Health Writing and Referencing Guide.
? Ensure that you use scholarly literature1
(digitised readings, research articles, relevant
Government reports and text books) that has been published within the last 5 years to
support your discussion. NB: This requirement is different to the previous two assessments
in this course as there is more literature available in this more recent timeframe for the
topics you are asked to address.
? You may use headings to organise your work if you wish.
? Use professional and/or academic language2
throughout.
? Refer to the marking guidelines when writing your assignment. This will assist you in
calculating the weightings of the sections for your assignment.
? Submit your assignment via the turn-it-in as per the instructions on your Learning@Griffith
course site. [Link can be found in the ‘Assessment’ tab].
1 Scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles are written by scholars or professionals who are experts in their fields, as
opposed to literature such as magazine articles, which reflect the tastes of the general public and are often meant as
entertainment.
2 Everyday language is predominantly subjective. It is mainly used to express opinions based on personal preference or
belief rather than evidence. Written academic English is formal. It avoids colloquialisms and slang, which may be
subject to local and social variations. Formal language is more precise and stable, and therefore more suitable for the
expression of complex ideas and the development of reasoned argumentation.
