Doing a "peer review," or response to, the two other students' posts that have been given to you
Prompts

  1. One of the main aspects of anthropological writing is reflexivity. Using information from lecture and the textbook, define reflexivity in your own words, and talk about how your presence and identity (e.g. your gender, age, etc.) affected what the people around you did during your participant observation. How has your identity potentially shaped your interpretation of what you observed?
  2. What do you think are the strengths and limitations of participant observation as a research method? What kinds of data does it allow you to collect?
  3. Come up with two issues or debates that show how institutions (e.g., governments, religious bodies, media) attempt to regulate aspects of sexuality. Share with a partner.
  4. Let’s dig into intersectionality. Think about your own class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and religion. In what aspects of your identity do you find more privilege, and others where you find more obstacles? For example, “As an upper class cisgender white man, I have a lot of privilege, but I do find obstacles living in the U.S. as a practicing Muslim.” Start thinking about this with your partner. We will continue this discussion in later weeks as we introduce further topics.
  5. What are some of the possible physical (e.g., bodily health), mental (e.g., wellbeing), and structural (e.g., food deserts, gentrification, mortgage discrimination) effects of economic inequality? Draw examples from your own contexts first, or from Guest’s chapter if need be.
  6. According to K. Guest’s chapter 11, what are some effects of global inequality?
  7. How does socioeconomic class feel present in your lives--either in positive or negative ways? How often is class brought up in discussions with your family, peers, etc.? Share with your partner later.
