Description
On Tuesday (10/15), you will be presenting our third debate on single rule in Rome. Your prompt is as follows:
Julius Caesar has recently been assassinated not long after a brutal civil war and Rome is left with a choice. Should Rome be governed by one man, someone who has imperium for life like Caesar was granted? Or should Rome return to the Republic’s system of Senatorial power?
You have creative liberty to choose your character but ensure that you are being as historically accurate as possible (do not talk about emperors/empire we are not there yet!). Each group should have members of different social classes and economic standing. Use this background to inform the way you shape your speech/argument.
Team 5 is arguing for single rule under one man. Think about the benefits of a dictatorship. Look at previous dictatorships/ periods when Rome was under the influence of only one man. What was effective?
When preparing your debates, remember to use examples of logos, pathos, and ethos. While you don’t need to incorporate all three into your speech, make it clear that you are using one of those strategies. Read the syllabus section to see a fleshed out grading rubric for the debates to determine what I am expecting from each of you.
As always, I am willing to help if you’re having trouble. Feel free to send me an email or come to my office hours. Communicate with your group members, make sure you are all on the same page!
Additionally, be lively, loud, engaging, etc. Most importantly, your speech should be four minutes. Try to get that right on the nose, but I’d rather you go slightly over than under – a two minute speech, e.g. is unacceptable. Attached is the grade rubric below so that you know what to expect.
