Social Work

No introduction or conclusion sections for this paper are necessary. Just make sure to answer each question in
each section of the five sections fully and well. Each section should include explicit links to the course material and should use APA style when citing course readings. Please review Orientation to HBSE Papers for more
information.)
The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate students’ deeper understanding of the three psychological
theories from this middle section of the course and how they can be used to guide practice with individuals and
families.
This is not the type of assignment that students can complete the night before it is due. The questions in the
prompt is designed to be challenging and to push students to understand the course material more deeply.
They are as much an assessment of where students are at with the course material as they are part of the
the learning process in this course.
To begin, select one of the following case studies, as presented by Hutchison (2019). For your convenience,
these cases have been duplicated at the end of this webpage below the section labeled "Rubric."
“Carl’s Struggle for Identity” (p. 190)
Now, select two of the following theories as to the focus for your assignment.
Social-cognitive theory
Psychodynamic theory
Attachment theory
Then, answer the questions below. Students should complete this assignment by developing well-formulated
sections with respect to the following questions. No additional introductory or concluding sections are needed,
nor are transition sentences between sections. The assignment should reflect students’ own thoughts and analysis—not that of classmates, work colleagues, or anybody else.
Section #1
Describe the key issues presented in the case study, describing the developmental issues facing the client
the system, grounding this discussion in material from the textbook chapter that corresponds to the case study
(i.e., the chapter on middle childhood or the chapter on adolescence). How does this developmental lens frame
possible goals for social work practice with this client system?
Section #2
Describe how focal theory #1 (of the two that you chose from the three above; social-cognitive theory,
psychodynamic theory, or attachment theory) would frame what is potentially contributing to the client’s issues,
as introduced in section #1. Within this discussion, make sure to cite at least two specific concepts or
propositions from the theory, using references to readings and other class materials to ground these ideas.
Discuss implications for social work practice with this client system, making sure that these points of
application is grounded in the theoretical insights that you discussed in this section.
Section #3
Describe how focal theory #2 (of the two that you chose from the three above; social-cognitive theory,
psychodynamic theory, or attachment theory) would frame what is potentially contributing to the client’s issues,
as introduced in section #1. Within this discussion, make sure to cite at least two specific concepts or
propositions from the theory, using references to readings and other class materials to ground these ideas.
Discuss implications for social work practice with this client system, making sure that these points of application are grounded in the theoretical insights that you discussed in this section. Throughout this
discussion, make explicit how the insights from this theory are similar or different from the theory discussed in section #2.
Section #4

Identify at least two of the implications for social work practice listed in the Hutchison Chapter and use critical
thinking skills to identify at least one practice skill that you would like to develop further to optimize your
practice with clients facing the focal issue(s) in the case study. Discuss how these practice skills follow from at
least one of the two focal theories discussed in sections #2 and #3. Reflect on your level of interest in working
on this skill as part of your social work training. For example, do you plan to seek field experiences or pursue
additional coursework to help hone these particular practice skills?
