Complete a process analysis, a type of writing that “explains an action, a mechanism, or an event from beginning to end” (Flachman 188). Process analysis
seeks to give readers specific directions on how to do something (directive/instructive) or relates information about how something happens or works
(informative). For example, your essay can enumerate clear step-by-step instructions on how to complete a task or achieve a goal; it can also provide
chronological steps explaining how an event unfolded. Be sure to introduce your topic with a clear purpose statement and then explain how that process
unfolds. Questions to consider before writing include the following: Do you want to create a sort of “user manual” with clear instructions for the reader to
follow? How will you logically present the process to your readers? Do the stages of the process occur chronologically, cyclically, or simultaneously? Do you
want to write your process in an academic, essay-style format, or do you want to detail your process through step-by-step instructions, like in a “listicle” you
might read online?
VERY IMPORTANT: Write a “how to” guide for someone who is ready to change something about his/her life. You can decide what your audience might be
seeking to change (breaking a bad habit, changing environments, shifting careers, etc.) Provide specific step-by-step or chronological instructions for
achieving the desired change and delineate the rewards for seeing the change through.
