Story Analysis

A couple of times throughout the story, it was noted that George had heard noises coming from his ears. At the beginning of the story, it was mentioned that “And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear.” (Vonnegut, 1961). Why was it necessary to include this detail and refer back to it several times throughout the story? What impact does George being intelligent to the point where he must wear a mental handicap radio play in the story? Why couldn’t the author leave this detail out? Please explain in detail.
