Ten Compelling Buddhist Sculptures and Paintings
NOTE: A "listicle" is an article in the format of a list. Listicles are very popular on the internet.
Guidelines for your listicle:
▸ Select ten compelling Buddhist sculptures and paintings for your list.
▸ Select them from any lectures and readings posted on the syllabus between April 7th and April 19th.
▸ List them in chronological order from oldest to newest.
▸ Identify each item in your list as accurately as you can as follows: name of work, historical period,
approximate date, material, location. Note: It is not necessary to write these identifications in sentences.
▸ Write two sentences for each work. Using your own words, describe the iconography of the work and its
religious significance.
▸ Attach an image of each of the ten works in your listicle.
Format Sample for a Listicle Entry:
Note: This example would NOT be appropriate for your listicle because it is Shinto architecture, not Buddhist
sculpture or painting.
Name: Main Sanctuary, Ise Shrine. Materials: Cypress wood, miscanthus reeds. Historical Period: Late Kofun/
Hakuhō. Date: Rebuilt at 20-year intervals since the 7th century. Location: Mie Prefecture.
This architectural style is identified with Shinto by numerous features, including chigi (diagonal finials),
muchikake (projecting rods under the eaves), and katsuogi (log-shaped weights on the roof). This shrine is
dedicated to Amaterasu, a deity believed to be the ancestress of the emperors of Japan.
