The Cold War policy of containment
Select ONE of the three essay questions provided below, and will write a two and a half to three
and a half page essay in double spaced and twelve point font format.
In addition, a minimum of ONE source must be included and properly cited within the essay. This source can
be either the optional textbook, another book of an academic or scholarly nature, an academic journal article, a
newspaper article (many of the aforementioned are available on line), or a RELIABLE historical or political web
site. Citations can be done in either the APA, Chicago or MLA styles.
QUESTION ONE
The Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference of 1945 both featured agreements reached by the
American, British and Soviet leaders present that in turn greatly impacted the outcome of the Second World
War as well as certain complications that emerged afterward. Discuss the more significant agreements
reached at Yalta and Potsdam. Why were some of them so open to criticism leveled against Presidents
Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman? Conclude the essay by assessing as to whether Roosevelt and Truman
were more deserving of praise or criticism for the agreements reached at Yalta and Potsdam, and why.
QUESTION TWO
The Cold War policy of containment as well as the accompanying Truman Doctrine have been seen as highly
successful in Europe during the years of 1945 to 1949. Discuss the American policies as well as direct
American actions in Europe that have led social scientists to conclude why containment in that part of the world
was so positively enforced. Conclude the essay by assessing how and why containment in Europe was so
critical to American interests, as well as why containment was more successfully implemented there than in
other parts of the world.
QUESTION THREE
The Cold War policy of containment as well as the accompanying Truman Doctrine have been seen as, at best,
a "mixed bag" of success in East Asia during the years of 1945 to 1949. Discuss the American policies as well
as direct American actions in East Asia that have led social scientists to conclude why containment in that part
of the world was enforced in such a difficult manner. Conclude the essay by assessing how and why
containment in East Asia was, in the overall sense, not as successful as it was in Europe.
