The difference between verse and prose and state

1/ Explain the difference between verse and prose and state which one of the two is characteristic of the early ancient literature.       2/ List at least FOUR foundational main characteristics of epic poetry and indicate how some of them apply to the two epic poems you have read for this class.       3/Which are the main categories of writing (according to your class’s notes and not general online information)?       4/ In which chapters of the Odyssey specifically Odysseus tells his own story in first person? To whom is he telling the story and what is the story about in a few words?       5/ Does the Odyssey in general as an epic poem hold any historical truth or is it completely fictional? To respond to this question, you should first ponder if the Trojan War has indeed any historical base or it is strictly a figment of Homer’s imagination. And if indeed it happened, how do we know it and WHO gave us evidence?       6/ Clarify the use of italics in a sentence. Why and when do we set text in italics specifically? (We have discussed three main reasons). Also, specify the distinction between italicized titles and titles in quotation marks.       7/We have discussed in class how in certain instances some characters in the Odyssey (including Odysseus) present us with antiepic sentiments, in other words, their reactions, feelings or words denunciate certain typical acts or responses of the epic character, such as valor, pride and fame. We have discussed in class TWO such instances from chapters 8 and 11. Please name them and explain how the specific characters’ words or actions run against or even reject some of the principles of epic poetry.       8/Explain the importance and the role of the PROEM in an epic poem.   Then, using the Odyssey as a case in point, specify the following:   -where exactly the proem appears and where it ends?   -Who is the very first character the poet is invoking to in the proem and why?       9/ If you were to interpret the Odyssey through an Analytic point of view, then what would be your interpretation of its authorship?       10/Briefly discuss the encounters of the two main epic heroes, Gilgamesh and Odysseus, with their mothers. Identify the two specific women and explain what each of the two characters learns from his mother’s insights?
