The Gutenberg Printing Press The Gutenberg Printing press was invented in Europe in approximately the year 1450 and this invention is often described as the beginning of ‘The Print Revolution’. Discuss some of the political, social and cultural consequences of early print; how far do you agree that print was a catalyst for ‘revolution’ in the early modern period? Quality of analysis and argument: ensure that you address/engage with your chosen essay question; develop your argument on the basis of and in relation to your readings/research. We also look at the effectiveness of your use of relevant examples. ? Research: Use the reading list in this module guide to select suitable sources. Always read as widely as possible and be discerning! - your main sources/readings should always be academic to provide you with the necessary knowledge, ideas, theories and arguments. Only on the basis of engaging with such sources will you be able to critically address/discuss the questions asked and be in a position to critically evaluate popular media texts and examples. ? Quality of writing style: Use of academic style, grammar, overall structure and coherence. Remember, you are asked to produce an academic essay – NOT an ‘opinion’ piece as such or a journalistic piece of writing). Ensure that your essay includes an introduction, outlining the issues/questions at stake and summarizing the main points/arguments to be developed in the main part of the essay. You also need to provide a conclusion (summarizing the main findings; possibly also highlighting issues that have emerged but would necessitate further examination in the future and cannot be elaborated on in this specific piece of work). ? Citation and referencing: ALWAYS reference your sources when quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. Your referencing style needs to be officially recognized (for example, adhere to Harvard) and consistently applied. Do not forget/neglect your Bibliography: include all sources referred to/used, be it books, chapters in edited collections, journal articles (electronic or paper based), websites, newspaper articles etc. Presentation ? All written work for assessment must be typed. ? Double-space your work, and provide wide (3cm) margins. ? Write the essay question at the top of page one. ? Each page must be numbered. ? Each page must include your student number. ? You must use the cover sheet provided by the School Office. Submission Please upload your essay on Turnitin through student central; the submission portal will be available to you in due course. The deadline for this assignment is 12 noon on Friday, 22 January 2016. Further instructions on how to do this will be given in class.
