Methods This study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, a literature review was conducted to identify and synthesize existing research on the impact of Airbnb on the hospitality sector and economy in South Africa. In the second phase, qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 stakeholders in the hospitality sector in South Africa. The stakeholders included Airbnb hosts, hoteliers, tourism officials, and government officials. Results The literature review found that Airbnb has had a mixed impact on the hospitality sector and economy in South Africa. On the one hand, Airbnb has created new opportunities for homeowners and travelers. On the other hand, Airbnb has also put pressure on the traditional hotel industry and led to concerns about the impact of Airbnb on housing affordability and tourism. The qualitative interviews confirmed the findings of the literature review. The Airbnb hosts interviewed for this study reported that they were happy with the income they were earning from renting out their homes on Airbnb. They also reported that they enjoyed meeting new people and sharing their homes with travelers. The hoteliers interviewed for this study were more mixed in their views of Airbnb. Some hoteliers reported that Airbnb was taking business away from them, while others said that Airbnb was actually helping to boost tourism in South Africa. The tourism officials interviewed for this study were generally positive about the impact of Airbnb. They said that Airbnb was helping to make South Africa more accessible to travelers and that it was also helping to promote tourism to less-visited destinations. The government officials interviewed for this study were more cautious about the impact of Airbnb. They said that they were concerned about the impact of Airbnb on housing affordability and tourism. They also said that they were concerned about the lack of regulation of Airbnb in South Africa. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that Airbnb has had a mixed impact on the hospitality sector and economy in South Africa. Airbnb has created new opportunities for homeowners and travelers, but it has also put pressure on the traditional hotel industry and led to concerns about the impact of Airbnb on housing affordability and tourism.
