The Role of Health Service Administrators
Part A: Culture & Health Interview
Step 1: Interview a friend/colleague that is from another diverse community (ex: a different country, a different cultural group etc) – Instructor approval needed
• Send email to instructor with who you will be interviewing and how they are represent a different culture/identity background from you.
• This selection will inform Part B (Questions 1 & 2)
Step 2: Conducting the interview: Be sure to ask these questions
• How does living in the United States as a _________________ look like for you?
• What are some stereotypes people have about your?
• What are some challenges you face that are related to your cultural background or identity?
• What does being healthy mean to you?
• What does being sick/ill mean to you?
• How does your culture influence or shape your definition of health and illness?
• What are some challenges in being healthy that you or your family face due to your cultural identity?
• What are some challenges related to getting healthcare you face due to your culture/identity?
• What are some ideas or solutions you can provide for those working in the healthcare field to tackle these challenges?
• Write out your own question that you will ask
Step 3: Write your “Part A” of the final paper. This written component should include:
1. Interview Overview
a. In two sentences provide insight on who you interviewed and why (provide an “Alias” name for this individual
2. Interview Summary
a. Based on your interview questions, provide a summary of your interviewee’s response (work to summarize and compile this information) to avoid being lengthy
3. Interview Reflection
a. Briefly discuss what you learned from this interview
b. Briefly discuss if your views about this culture/sub-population changed (why or why not)
Step 4: Complete Part B per the instructions above
PART B: Culture and Health Paper
1. Look at the population group that your interviewee represented – (Module 1-4)
a. Provide a brief description of this population group in the United States ( in regards to race/ethnicity, cultural background, immigration status, language proficiency etc)
b. Provide an overview of common health disparities they experience.
i. Introduce this section by first defining what health disparities are then providing an overview of these disparities
c. Briefly discuss what causes these health disparities (ex: social determinants of health factors)
i. Based on your interview findings and research, briefly discuss the challenges they faced and what social determinants of health these fall in: example:
d. Briefly discuss challenges faced in accessing and utilizing health related services
i. Include how interacting with service providers impact health and experiences during the clinical encounter
1. Be sure to discuss how implicit bias can shape these experiences/interactions
2. Provide an overview of solutions to achieve health equity amongst your selected population group. (Module 5)
a. Be sure to define what health equity is and how this relates to health disparities and social justice
b. Discuss how cultural competence and cultural humility is a solution to achieving health equity
c. Applying the CLAS standards provide some solutions to tackle the challenges you discussed in question 3c-d
i. Ex: how to ensure proper access to services
ii. Ensure patient-provider relationships do not negatively impact health outcomes
1. Be sure to provide at least 3 specific examples of how your organization can work to improve individual (employees) AND organizational cultural competence guided by the CLAS
d. Briefly discuss how collaboration with other organizations and disciplines is important to achieving health equity and providing culturally competent care
e. Briefly discuss and provide examples of negative health related outcomes that result when providers/organizations do not offer culturally competent care or services
3. Health Service Administrators
a. Look up one job/positions you would like to have that entails overseeing health care providers (ex: physicians, nurses, other allied health professionals) in a clinical area or department (pick a different organization from the first job)
i. Provide an overview of the organization you work in
ii. Your role and what your responsibilities include
iii. Discuss why understanding and applying cultural competency concepts is important to those you work with and provide services to (Module 5)
iv. Briefly discuss why health services administrators should incorporate cultural competency training as part of their professional development
v. Briefly discuss and provide examples of negative health related outcomes that result when providers/organizations do not offer culturally competent care or services in this or similar organization
4. Conclusion –provide a general summary and takeaway of the overall paper
a. Two sentences to summarize each question (6 sentences total)
b. 2 sentences on why health service administrators must understand the role of culture in shaping health outcomes and utilize health equity and cultural competence concepts in practice.
