Description
The purpose for asking students to pursue a course in sociology is to expose them to the concept of the sociological imagination. Our text explains that the sociological imagination is “… a way of seeing our own and other people’s behavior in relation to history and social structure (Griffiths, et al., p. 6). We began this course discussing C. Wright Mills’ concept of the sociological imagination. In the chapter The Promise, Mills writes: “Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both” (p. 1). It seems fitting to close this course with Mills’ words in mind. For the opportunity of replacing your lowest grade with the grade you earn on this assignment, discuss an aspect or event in an individual’s life in relation to the historical events that surround it. The individual can be taken from any of the episodes we viewed in The Way We Live or popular culture (i.e., biography, memoirs, movies) or personal experience. Your grade will be based on how well you demonstrate the sociological imagination. Please submit this written assignment via the link found under the module “Extra Credit” found in the Content area.
