The spectrum model of sex, gender identity, and gender expression views these concepts as continua rather than as two distinct, opposing categories (binary). This model acknowledges the vast diversity of human experience, moving beyond the traditional male/female or masculine/feminine framework.

Sex is viewed as a spectrum rather than a strict male-female binary. This acknowledges that some individuals are born with biological characteristics that don't fit neatly into either category, known as intersex individuals.

Gender identity is an individual's internal sense of self as male, female, a blend of both, or neither. The spectrum model recognizes that gender identity is not limited to cisgender male and female, but can also include transgender, non-binary, and genderfluid identities.
