Description
After practicing a critical reading of The Warmth of Other Suns (TWOOS)Preview the document, write a narrative non-fiction essay about someone’s migration story. The author of TWOOS provides a great model for how to write about migration. For your own story, ask a family member, friend, or classmate to serve as a subject for your essay. Pretend you are journalists, like Isabel Wilkerson, and gather all the facts of their story through interviewing them. Use the journalist’s questions (also known as the 5W’s & H) to create the questions for your interview. Here are the journalist's questions:
Who
What
When
Where
Why
How
Be sure each of your questions begins with one of these words. After you compose your questions, then contact your interviewee to set up a time for the interview. Be sure you record the interview, as the recording is due with your essay. As a narrative, the body of your essay should include the following elements:
Main character (the person you interview)
Setting (the places the migration story takes place)
Conflict (one major obstacle your character overcame in the journey)
Resolution (a lesson learned or moral of the story)
Concrete Sensory Detail (describe using sight, sound, smell, taste, & touch)
Word Requirement: 1,000 – 1,500 Words (roughly 4 to 6 pages double-spaced).
