Here is the text of the Equal Rights Amendment. Our first two discussion posts will be about the Amendment.
So let's start by reading the Amendment and seeing what it actually says! What do you think was the appeal of
this? What might the main arguments against it be? Here's the text: "Section 1. Equality of rights under the law
shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."
Here is a reading by Gloria Steinem sharing her support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). She what she
says. What does it reminder you of? Where have we heard this rhetoric before? Why do you suppose her
ideals broke through the national conscience in the 1970s and not 50 years earlier? What are her main
arguments in favor of the ERA? http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/28-the-unraveling/gloria-steinem-onequal-rights-for-women-1970/
Here is another view about the ERA. Remember, that the ERA is listed above, it's 23 words long. This video by
Phyllis Schlafly is talking about the feminist and women's liberation movemetn and why Schlafly opposes the
ERA and feminism. What do we notice about her arguments? How do you relate her ideas to those of Gloria
Steinem? What are the fundamental differences between those two women? Why do you think Schlafly's ideas
were so popular? Note that the video begins with just audio, but please listen.
