US expansion in the 1860’s

 

Does anyone remember how Canada started? US expansion was a recognized concern in the 1860’s and politicians in the colonies envisioned a national railroad as a solution. They decided to unite as one country but not completely – some people believed their cultural identies would disappear in a confederation. Hence, some aspects of government were established under national control (e.g., defense) while others were left to be managed by the provinces (e.g., education). Why? Your answer to this question may help you explain one of the perceived dangers of globalization.
