Visual rhetoric is the persuasive use of images to construct meaning or an argument. In regards to advertisements, companies use visual rhetoric to influence consumers to buy their products. For this paper, you will analyze the use of visual rhetoric in advertisements.
I. You will choose two advertisements. The advertisements should sell a parity product. The product should be something you can find at a grocery or department store. You can use Yahoo or Google to find advertisements by using the image search engine. Then, by using your notes and the visual rhetoric PowerPoint, you will analyze and evaluate the two advertisements. Your paper should develop a comparison and/or contrast of the advertisements.
II. The thesis should articulate the purpose of the paper; that purpose should be linked to the idea of visual rhetoric—the use of images to persuade consumers.
In your thesis, you must mention the visual rhetoric techniques you plan to use to analyze the advertisements: (models/celebrities, camera orientation, eye gaze, setting, props, and target audience.)
Lastly, you can use one of the following questions to develop your thesis:
1. What are the purposes of the advertisements?
2. How are the advertisements successful, or are the advertisements unsuccessful? Why?
III. In addition, your paper should analyze how the images influence the emotions, views, and behaviors of viewers.
