Analysis and evaluation of something. The writer focuses on a topic, analyzes it, defines key terms, and gives an
evaluation. The first thing to do is to establish criteria by which you will evaluate your subject. For example, if
you are trying to decide whether or not Die Hard is a good action movie, you must come up with
a list of criteria that all action movies must meet, such as explosions, clear hero and villain, and
egregious use of profanity. If Die Hard—or any other movie— meets these criteria, then you
can decide it is a good action movie.
This does involve establishing definitions of your subject, so you will still incorporate the last essay mode. But more than showing if your subject fits into the definition, you are showing how
your subject is a suitable example of it.
