World Music: Museums and Heritage

Description

Your response should be between 350 and 500 words in length. Look at all attached files. If you have any questions, let me know.

Prompt:
How, when, and in what way may displays of and/or claims to heritage be problematic? What is a proper display of heritage? An improper one? What is a proper/improper claim to heritage? Who do you have to be in order to claim a certain heritage? Who do you have to be to participate in a particular heritage? Think about Malm’s different types of cultural encounters and perhaps even reflect on the Tim Taylor article and think about how ‘Westerners’ engage with ‘world music’—what is a proper negotiation and engagement with these cultures, even if the encounter manifests itself as a relation between a single listener and an mp3 file?

To help you think about this, you may want to explore some additional non-scholarly articles online—there are some great ones on engaging with other cultures (i.e. appropriation v. appreciation, veneration v. theft), and think about how this topic has come up in the media, particularly with celebrities, large organizations or institutions and their questionable interactions with the cultures of various groups. What is a GOOD display of or claim to heritage?
