According to (Gravetter et al, 2021) a criterion variable is another name for a response variable or a dependent variable. The criterion variable is the variable that is being predicted in statistical analysis. A statistical method that is used to understand the relationship between two variables x and y is also known as simple linear regression. Variable x is known to be the predictor variable and the y variable is the criterion variable. If we create a scatterplot the criterion variable will be plotted along the y-axis and the predictor value will be plotted along the x-axis. An example of both a criterion and predictor is SAT scores are a predictor variable and college GPA is a criterion variable. You may find through regression analysis that there seems to be a strong correlation between SAT scores and college GPA. However, strong SAT scores do not cause high college GPAs (Glen, 2019).
