Required Reading:
“A Kind of Revolution” in Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States.
After completing the above reading, you will write an essay in which you critique Zinn’s essay “A
Kind of Revolution.” Your essay should address the following questions:
Howard Zinn argues that prior to the Revolutionary War many colonists did not support the war, and
thus the Founding Fathers “would have to woo the armed white population” (p.77). Using examples
from the chapter, demonstrate how he supports this contention. Do you agree or disagree with Howard
Zinn on this point? How and why?
What does Howard Zinn mean by “A Kind of Revolution”? Using examples from the chapter, the
textbook, and lectures, assess Zinn’s meaning of the title of this chapter. Do you agree or
disagree with Zinn? Explain why or why not.
Technical Requirements:
You do not need to do any additional research to write this paper, but if you do please provide the
proper citations for your additional sources.
Hint:
1. The Founding Fathers had to woo the white armed population because United States at the time did
not have professionally trained soliders to fight conventional war with the British.
2.He meant “a kind of revolution” because the war is not a revolution itself. The revolution began
when US achieved independence after the war.
