Article comparison-written assignment Order Description Assessment 2: Type: Written assignment Due: 22nd April – 29th April, 2016 at 5.00 pm Weight: 30% Length: 1200 words Task: The assignment will provide you with the opportunity to learn how to read and identify the key points of an article in a relatively short period of time.?You will also learn how to critically compare and contrast different articles on the same topic. The content will also familiarise you with social?policy, how it is developed and contested issues for policy makers. Content will be provided on how to undertake this task.?At 9.00 am on Friday, April 22nd, two articles will be released via a link on the Learning @ Griffith webpage. Both of the articles will discuss a?relevant policy topic. Once the articles are released, you will have 1 week to complete and submit the assignment. ?You will be required to undertake a “compare and contrast” exercise as a means of learning about different ways authors write about a topic relating?to policy. The aim is not for you to undertake a thorough critical analysis of the two articles but rather undertake a comparison in relation to content?and style. Format: Your 1200 word essay will have an introduction, outlining the aim of the essay and key points that will be discussed. The subsequent paragraphs,?which will become the body of your assignment, will articulate identified similarities and differences in relation to content and then identified?similarities and differences in relation to style. The essay will finish with a concluding paragraph.?Only the two articles will need to be referenced in APA 6 style. The following questions should guide your essay: • What similarities and/or differences are there in the topic and focus of the articles? • What similarities and/or differences are there in the main arguments of the articles? • What similarities and/or differences are there in the message they are sending to policy makers regarding policy development? • What similarities and/or differences are there in the style of writing being used? • What similarities and/or differences are there in the tone of the articles? (ie: is one author presenting as more “expert” than the other?) • What similarities and/or differences are there in the credibility of the articles? Marking Criteria: Your assignment will be marked based on the following broad criteria: Students will be assessed on their ability to read, compare and contrast key points from two different articles based on the following criteria. Criteria Marks Comprehension: ability to distinguish main points of each article 5 Content analysis: Clear analysis of any similarities and /or differences in topic and focus, main arguments, and policy messages in the two articles 9 Style: Clear analysis of any similarities and /or differences in writing style, tone of articles and credibility of articles 9 Well written, grammatically correct and appropriately formatted essay 5 Referencing and reference list (2 references in accordance with APA 6th style 2 The task requires you to: (Remember this is an essay and should not be written in first person). •Write an introduction – For example – “This essay will ……… •Identify key points of the two articles (no comparison required for this section) CONTENT ANALYSIS: •Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) the topic and the focus of the articles •Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) the main argument of the articles •Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) the policy message of the articles STYLE ANALYSIS: •Compare and contrast (similarities and differences) of the writing style and tone of the articles •Discuss why one article presents as more credible (trustworthy, reliable, valid, believable) than the other.
