Order Description
explore this idea of a Raga vs a Scale. These musical ideas are similar but have significantly different cultural interpretations. From the readings and video links
it is clear that a for Indian Classical musicians, a Raga is loaded with meaning–from the time of day to the season. It is also clear that certain scales are treated
with a similar degree of cultural baggage by Irish folk musicians in the US and Ireland. The question is, then, how and more importantly why does something as simple
as a collection of pitches (scale/raga) take on so much cultural baggage over time? And, can this teach as anything about the attribution of meaning in American
Popular music?
