ASSIGNMENT:
Choose ONE exercise to answer
1) The purposes of the discussion covering Curley and Vitale’s Chapters 2, 3 & 4 are: identify determinants of health and define population outcomes, understand natural history of disease and the approaches integral for the prevention of disease and discuss the complexities of data collection and the strengths and weaknesses of study designs used in population research. The ultimate goal is to help you with your Experiential Learning Project Activity- Interprofessional Community Health Assessment Paper.
Instruction: From the Curley book, choose ONE of the exercise questions 2.4, 2.5, 3.10, or 4.3 (below) and provide the answer. You only have to answer ONE question. Correct responses to ALL of the chosen exercise questions will be provided at the end of the 6th week.
Exercise 2.4
A recent conference you attended included a session on ways that hospitals in the Southeast are using the NDNQI. You do not know very much about nursing indicators but recognize that this would be helpful to you in the new role you will have as a nurse manager.
• Where can you obtain information about the NDNQI?
• You later learn that the hospital where you work has just started collecting data on five of the NDNQI nursing indicators. You ask to review the data and find that the nursing care hours per patient day on your unit are low in comparison with the national data provided from the database. How can you use this information to improve patient care on your unit?
Exercise 2.5
Diabetes affects a growing number of Americans. You have been invited to join a collaborative of community agencies interested in tackling diabetes from a community perspective.
• What resources will you use to identify different outcomes related to diabetes?
• What outcomes related to diabetes are of most interest to community members?
• How will you compare the outcomes you select to monitor at the local level with state and national outcomes?
Exercise 3.10
• Perform a search to determine the incidence, prevalence, and survival rates for one of the following cancers in your state (lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer).
• Perform a search and describe the screening recommendations for the cancer you selected.
• Describe the advantages and disadvantages of cancer screening for the cancer you selected.
• How do the incidence, prevalence, and survival rates in your state compare to the national rates.
• What are potential confounders for the cancer you selected?
• What disparities in cancer incidence, mortality, and survival were you able to determine from your search?
Exercise 4.3
You are working in an ambulatory care clinic in an underserved community and are interested in improving the quality of health care that is provided in your area. You are concerned about an increase in the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the population that you serve. Before you launch an educational campaign aimed at both your staff and the community, you need to establish the severity of the problem.
• Identify a database at the local, state, or national level that can help you obtain the necessary information.
• How can you determine the incidence and prevalence of MRSA in your community?
• What are some of the potential errors that can occur in the reporting of MRSA to a local, state, or national database?
• How might this effect your interpretation of the data?
• What are some of the barriers to reporting in your community (i.e., hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, etc.)?
