For this assignment we will be focusing on the group of people who have meticulously carved, etched and designed the typefaces used throughout history. Even though the type designs have changed, the same principle remains … To communicate thoughts and emotions, transferring information from one to another.
This sequence of this assignment will follow the steps listed below.
1 Select the type designer, engraver, or artist.
2 Conduct initial research.
3 Write a rough draft.
4 Complete the final draft.
5 Submit the written work.
Possible Questions:
As you analyze an object, work of art, typeface, keep in mind the following:
• Who is the artist, printer, designer, engraver?
• What is their background, or history?
• Where and when was this person born, and where did they live?
• What style of type did they create? Serif, Sans Serif? Old English, Black Letter, Old Style, Modern,
Transitional, Square, Slab, Script, Cursive,
• Describe the features and characteristics of the type created.
• What is the function type created?
• Is the work spontaneous or calculcated?
• Who did the designer work for, or with?
• Was their worked commissioned by someone?
