Instructions are as follows:
Create a listener’s guide.
Include an introductory paragraph detaining:
A. Artist/ ensemble name with a general description of their make up and general performance style.
B. a descriptive timeline of the songs features or salient moments.
You must denote at least 5 points of interest.
C. Use musical terminology to describe these points.
D. Spelling and grammar count in determining your grade.
Example:
Song: The Coventry Carol
Artist: Chanticleer
Chanticleer is a twelve member, all-male choir that performs a wide range of classical music, from music of the Renaissance to modern works.
A characteristic of their sound is use of straight-tone singing (i.e. very little vibrato). Clarity of tone and absolutely perfect intonation are hallmarks of this group.
“The Conventry Carol” is an old carol, although this version evocates ancient music set alongside very modern sounds. This setting evokes very austere, peaceful moods, as well as aggressive, tense moments. It is primarily homophonic, but has a more rhythmically active section in the middle.
Timeline Ex.
0:01 First verse. very calm, with triadic harmony that grows from and returns to open fifths.
0:32 A single, sharp dissonance intimate a later change in mood.
0:42 Second verse. Open fifths lead into a more modern, but consonant, harmony.
1:28 Verse three. “Herod the King, in his raging…” begins a much more dissonant harmonic style. The lower register is more prominent and active, with the upper voices maintain the traditional melodic flow. Ends in a chord cluster at 1:58.
2:09 Fourth verse. Song evolves back into consonant harmonies. Still strong bass voice presence. Closes with major chord, ushering in the final verse.
3:00 Fifth verse. High melody with occasional low bass. Very peaceful, reflective.
