Paper details:
Research Paper due on 5/2/16
Once you identify an area of interest and work with it in paper 3, you need to focus on a topic and specific
thesis that you can manage in a research paper of approximately 8 pages. For the research paper itself, the
general guidelines are:
? Research and write an original “subjective/persuasive” research paper of approximately 8 pages.
? Introduce your topic, provide any needed background information, and make a clear claim that you can
support from what you learned through your research; i.e. present AND analyze information found.
? Using MLA format, cite a minimum of 5 sources
? Include a “Works Cited” page using MLA format of all the works you quote, paraphrase, or summarize in
any way in the text of your paper.
Based on your own ongoing work and my comments, you may need to drop some material you used in paper 3,
develop other aspects of your topic more fully, perhaps expand on key points and consider opposing viewpoints.
Perhaps you will want to modify your introduction, and most likely you will need a new conclusion, but much
depends on exactly what you write in paper 3: you may be able to use much of what you write in paper 3 but
develop it in more detail. In the final research paper, I will be looking for a clear central idea (a thesis/claim),
an appropriate principle of organization, and evidence and development sufficient to support your central idea.
Remember: It is not sufficient merely to report information you gather in your research. Rather, you must
provide background on the issues involved, present and analyze your research, take a position, and develop an
argument with specific evidence to support your assertions. Please see your English 120 material for helpful
information, and let me know if you have any questions.
