Order Description
After writing Madame Bovary, Flaubert was charged w/immorality. In defense, he argued Emma’s suicide showed the novel upheld morality and illustrated consequences of immorality. Did Flaubert believe this himself or was it a clever defense against charges? Is there any evidence in story he may have understood and sympathized with Emma or her situation? (link to story below.)
