Writing a consultancy brief.
Work in groups to get your ideas together but the letter will be an individual one.
You will begin this task in the seminar, but will need to complete it later as a portfolio piece.
First remind yourself of the tourism development situation described in Session 13 and 15 – the case study.
At the second meeting you had a role play in class in the seminar and then made a decision about what plan you wanted to adopt ( this went into your minutes ). The committee are now ready to go ahead with their development plans working together with the company.
The company have said that they are willing to invest £5million, and the local government hope to attract matching funding from the central government, so the total for the development will be £10million, hence they expect to generate £1million profit each year to make the project viable.
Therefore the tourist company and the community local government together have decided to appoint a consultant who is a relevant expert and development schemes of this nature to develop a plan for the project. They now need to find someone who will be willing to take on the job for them.
Decide what information you will need to include, what you should put in a SWOT analysis, how you will begin your letter ( your introduction to yourself and who you represent) and how you will end it ( what you actually want ).
This letter is formal in tone as you do not know James Handley at all but you do have his name.
This is a portfolio exercise! Put this in Part B.
You should write around 300 words.
You are Antonia Fernandez, clerk to the committee. After the second meeting the committee have asked Antonia, as the clerk, to write to send a consultancy brief to the consultant as described in Step Four from the lecture ( week 23 ) to ask for advice.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DESIGN THE DEVELOPMENT, JUST WRITE THE BRIEF TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION TO THE CONSULTANT WHO WILL PROPVIDE YOU WITH THE IDEAS – THAT IS THE CONSULTANT’S JOB.
The brief should contain these sections:
• Proper formal addresses /headings as this is a formal letter
• An introduction to who you are and why you are writing this letter
• A description of the background in the area (take the ideas from Sessions 13/15 ( seminars 13/15 ) but do not copy and paste – you must rewrite using your own ideas.) Explain that the community and the Tourist Company are promoting this venture together, and identify the other stakeholders in the community with an explanation of the problem and what the community and the company want to achieve. Explain that a tourist development will help to develop the area, but that it is necessary to protect the interests of the stakeholders and the environment.
• Provide a SWOT analysis to help the consultant.
• Explain the budget available and timescale.
• Make sure you do a proper ending
Your brief will be in the form of a formal letter to Mr James Handley of Handley’s Consulting Company. This means that you will need your address and an address for Handley’s Consulting Company. Make sure you have SWOT objectives clearly included.
This is a portfolio exercise! Put this in Part B.
You should write minimum 300 words.
