Description
The English painter Joseph Turner (1775 — 1851) and the German painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774 — 1840) are considered to be romantic painters that evoked the sublime — complex networks of emotion counted as sites of rapture. Compare two of their works, say — Turner’s The Sea of Ice (1824) and Friedrich’s Slaves Throwing Overboard the Dead & the Dying (1840) using the theories of Edmund Burke. Immanuel Kant also developed an analysis of the sublime. Use his reasoning to develop an evaluation of the Turner pair. Which analysis do you find the most insightful? Why?
