Clinical Evidence Based Practice Project Paper Guidelines
The purpose of the Clinical Evidence-Based Practice Project Paper is to assist the student to demonstrate understanding of the research process and the application of
evidence-based practice in clinical nursing. The component parts of this assignment will be developed over the course of the semester as we progress in our study of
the research process.
Clinical Evidence Based Practice Paper:
Consider your clinical experience to determine and identify a nursing problem. You may also wish to review the literature and review articles of interest. In this
assignment you will propose a clinical question and a beginning practice solution based on research evidence. Selected problems must be approved by the course
professor. Select a minimum of 3 published research articles (may be qualitative or quantitative) which relate to the identified problem. Selected articles may be from
nursing research journals, or research journals from related disciplines. These articles will be used to define and support the clinical problem, and to construct a
basic evidence based proposal as a solution to the clinical nursing problem. . In some clinical problems when there does not appear to have sufficient evidence to
propose a solid intervention plan, a research design proposal for this paper is an alternative approach to this problem section.
Guidelines and Grading Criteria:
Introduction to the Clinical Problem (10 points)
Write a paragraph or two to introduce the problem to the reader. The introduction should broadly address the topic, but should include references to support your
problem.
Significance of the Problem to Nursing Practice (15 points)
In 1-2 paragraphs, discuss the significance of the problem to nursing practice. You may need to address financial, physical, psychological or organizational issues.
This also should include references.
Clinical Question (10 points)
Write a brief paragraph about your clinical question and clearly state your evidence based topic question. Be specific. Use the guidelines in your book on pages 44-46.
Remember that this is not a research question or hypothesis, but a clinical question written to guide your evidence based proposal.
Literature Review (20 points)
Review the literature and identify a minimum of 3 published research study articles from quality, peer-reviewed journals. (These will need to be submitted with the EBP
Clinical Paper). Each reviewed research study should briefly include the discussion of following information: Study Design, Sampling, Procedures for Data Collection,
Findings.
Solution to the Clinical Problem based on Research Evidence (20 points)
Construct an evidence-based solution to the clinical problem, with a minimum of 3 evidence-based interventions. Include a brief plan for evaluation with each
intervention. This section may be written in paragraph style, or may be constructed as a table using the format below. Reference your interventions.
Intervention: Evaluation:
1.
2.
3.
Alternative Solution to address the Clinical Problem is to propose a research design (In lieu of the above but also worth 20 points)
Write this section in paragraph form. Propose a research design to answer the research practice problem. Include purpose of research, hypothesis and/or null
hypothesis, description of participants, methods, human participant protection, and overall strengths and limitations of the design.
Summary and Conclusion (5 points)
Write a summary paragraph, and conclude your paper.
Additional Criteria: (20 points)
• 5-7 pages of text in length (does not count title page and reference list)
• Correct use of APA format, including headings, title page and reference list (abstracts are not needed)
• Correct grammar and sentence structure
