Since you’ve done all the heavy lifting of researching, you are now ready to piece your argument together. The final essay of the semester is a research report, in which you bring your research together to form one cohesive essay. This essay should be a thesis-driven paper, so you need to take a stance on the issue. (Remember your research gap!) Use your knowledge of persuasive rhetoric to respectfully argue your point. Your essay should be based in and supported by credible, relevant research.
Your research report will be assessed on the following criteria:
Introduction: You should provide background information and a clear focus for your essay. Be sure to keep kairos and exigence in mind when writing the introduction. You should also address the research gap.
Thesis statement: Your thesis should be a specific and arguable claim. It should be comprised of two sentences that answer the who/what, how and why questions.
Strength of the argument: Your essay should provide contextual information on the topic, cover multiple angles of the topic, and support the argument with clear and effective research.
Structure of the argument: You should structure your essay with your audience in mind. You should use at least three major supporting points for your thesis. These points should be explained clearly, grounded in evidence, and they should be analyzed for the audience’s benefit.
Quotations and research: You should have a balance of summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation of your sources. You should also pay special attention to correct use of in-text citations to avoid plagiarism. Be sure to include at least 7 current sources; at least 4 of these sources should be scholarly or from trade journals. You may use more sources.
MLA format: Your essay should be formatted in MLA style. Your works cited page should follow MLA guidelines exactly.
Grammar and style: You should pay attention to your wording, Make sure that your essay is free from grammar mistakes (comma splices, run-on sentences, fragments), and make sure you avoid using wordy language and passive voice.
Originality and initiative: Overall, you should be anticipating your audience’s needs. If, after you piece your research together, you feel that you need more information to explain one point better, you should conduct more research to fill the gap. Write with your audience in mind and be sure to thoroughly explain all points.
To reiterate, the minimum requirements for this essay are:
8 pages minimum (more is fine)
7 total sources (at least 4 must be scholarly/trade journal)
