CM0113L DEVELOPING PROFESSIONAL SKILLS/Coursework assignment DPS4: thoughts on a year’s learning
One key aspect of being a computing professional is the ability to learn, and to update your skills and knowledge – whether through reading, lectures or practical work. An important first step towards becoming a computing professional is to become a good student and a competent independent learner.
You have now had almost a full academic year of being a university student, time in which to start to develop appropriate ways of learning which will help you both now, as a student, and later as a computing professional. Think about the progress you have made towards becoming a good student and a computing professional, comparing your approach and expectations at the start of the year (remember the first assignment?) to now. In particular, consider the following questions.
1. Do you feel that you have been sufficiently motivated, self-disciplined and organised to manage your time so that you have maintained the right balance between academic work, social life and other commitments?
2. Do you feel that you have improved as an effective independent learner since last September?
The other key aspect is the ability to communicate with others. Think about the opportunities you have had within this module to develop your communication skills – report and other forms of writing, working co-operatively with others, discussing and negotiating, giving a presentation.
3. Do you feel that you have improved as an effective communicator since last September?
4. Which, if any, communication and/or study skills do you feel you particularly need to continue to improve, as you go into your second year?
Note that an important communication skill is the ability to concisely summarise your responses, and to provide reasons and/or appropriate examples to support your points. So think carefully about the questions before you prepare your assignment for submission.
What, how and when to submit
• A 1000 word reflective report in which you have summarised your responses to the four questions, making sure you have given reasons and/or appropriate examples to support your answers.
• Save your work in a file using your username as the filename, in any common file format. For example: larmita2.doc, larmita2.pdf
• Submit your file to this module in Blackboard by 4.00pm on Friday 1st May 2015.
• The usual lateness penalties will apply unless there are mitigating circumstances and an extension has been agreed.
