Use a source from film to explore a psychology topic
– types of love (Passionate and companionate love) (p. 386-388)
Note: This assignment will require you to read pages 386-388 from the book “Introducing Psychology
second edition by Daniel M. Wegner, Daniel L. Schacter and Daniel T.” and also to watch the film
“The Princess Bride from director Rob Reiner” before working on the essay.
Instructions:
1. Begin with a BRIEF one-paragraph description of the movie’s plot and main characters
(approximately 100-150 words). Please do not copy this from Wikipedia or IMDB. This is plagiarism
and very easy for me to check!
2. Next paragraph should be a transition paragraph in which you explain what you will do in the
essay. What is your topic? Explain the psychology concept in own words. How will you use the source
(movie) to illustrate your concepts? Who are the characters you will be relating the concepts to?
(Think of this as your true introduction paragraph)
3. The next two paragraphs should explain two relevant aspects of your topic (types of love;
Passionate and companionate love) using your source (film). For example, perhaps you see evidence
of both companionate and passionate love in the movie. So, in your third paragraph you might want
to talk about examples of companionate love between the characters and in your fourth paragraph
about passionate love between the same or other characters.
4. In your fourth paragraph you will conclude in an interesting, creative, engaging way and not
simply summarize the paper. Also, introduce a new concept here. However, make sure you cite
appropriately.
Brief example:
If you watched the film “The Break-Up” in which Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn try to decide
whether to break up or stay together, you might wonder whether psychologists can explain how people
make decisions. (You won’t be using that topic so I will use it for this example!). You would then
begin your essay by including the name of the movie (The Break-Up) and brief description of the
movie’s plot and main characters.
You would follow this explanation of the source by listing the topic you chose to relate to the
movie (Decision making) in your second paragraph. In your paragraph, you would describe “decision
making” and state that two types of decision making that are evident in the movie, which you will
describe in your essay. For example, your text describes people make choices using trial and error.
You would note this strategy in your third paragraph, provide a paraphrased definition, and then
apply it to the movie by listing scenes or characters that illustrate this process of decision-
making. Your text also describes another way people make decisions, using heuristics. You would
then list heuristics as a type of decision making in your fourth paragraph, provide a paraphrased
definition of heuristics and list scenes/characters/behaviour of the characters in the movie that
reflect the use of heuristics. Finally, you would conclude in an interesting way.
USING YOUR TEXT AS A REFERENCE
An important component of this assignment is the ability to take the relevant information from the
pages assigned (pages 386-388 from the book Introducing Psychology second edition by Daniel M.
Wegner, Daniel L. Schacter and Daniel T) and explain it clearly in your own words. In psychology we
rarely use direct quotes anyway so in this assignment you will not use any direct quotes from the
assigned pages, only Paraphrase.
Important:
In the paper show that you are considering the two relevant aspects of the topic (both types of
love; Passionate and companionate love) and provide specific examples from the movie that
illustrate these concepts.
