Watch the music video lemonade and read articles provided to write an argumentation
Read bell hooks’ “Moving Beyond Pain,” along with Sesali Bowen’s “Auntie bell, I
love you, but you gotta chill,” Blair LM Kelley’s “We should be celebrating Lemonade,
not picking it apart,” and Joy-Ann Reid’s “Lemonade is a powerful Black feminist
aesthetic in its own right,” with a critical eye. (You will find both hooks’ essay and the
three responses attached to this exam.)
Write an analytical or argumentative essay of 750-1000 words, where you address the
arguments made by both bell hooks and at least one other critic who is responding to
hooks’ work on the topic of Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade.
In your essay, address the rhetorical efficacy of the arguments provided and adopt a
position of your own on any of the key issues raised by the texts. When navigating
your own position on Lemonade, you may use direct evidence from the Formation
video we watched and discussed in class.
Remember to make specific references to examples in the video and the texts.
